One of the few Canyon Lake boat ramps still open to the public will close Monday-Thursday starting Oct. 1, the Water Oriented Recreation District of Canyon Lake (WORD) said Monday.

Boat Ramp #18 in Canyon Park only will be open from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday-Sunday when off-season hours kick in. Swim beaches 1 and 2 will close. Last entry is at 6 p.m.

The ramp, which has a new courtesy dock, is generally considered one of the best on the lake and until WORD’s announcement was open seven days a week.

There are no changes in hours of operation for boat ramps #17 and 19, the only two other ramps on Canyon Lake that are still open. Boat Ramp #17 is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Canyon Lake Marina operates #19.

WORD General Manager Mike Dussere said boater demand is “pretty low” even in September, and ramps #17 and 19 should be enough for boaters.

“Normally Canyon Park is completely closed in October,” he said. “Last year we left it open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day as an experiment and visitation was extremely slow. Leaving it open 8 a.m. to 7:30 on Friday through Sunday captures the days when the other ramps might not be able to handle the demand and keeps the hours as long as we normally are open to try to accommodate boaters.”

Main hours for WORD’s Comal Park starting in October are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. Last entry is allowed at 4:30 p.m.

There are 23 boat ramps located around Canyon Lake. Twenty-two ramps are on the main body of the lake. One ramp is upstream on the Guadalupe River leading into the lake.
