Temperatures will briefly warm above freezing this afternoon but another hard freeze is in store for tonight into Christmas morning, the U.S. National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio said.

The high today will be 40 degrees but temperatures will drop into the teens and 20s tonight. Subfreezing temperatures as low as 14 degrees are possible.

A hard freeze warning remains in effect for all of South Central Texas through 10 a.m. Sunday.

Take steps now to protect tender plants and pets. Act to prevent  freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes. They should be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip slowly.

Temperatures will continue to warm through the middle of next week with the help of abundant sunshine.

Slight chances for showers are in the forecast beginning Thursday afternoon for eastern areas.
