CLHS Earns ‘Top Team’ at Comal ISD Chess Championship

Canyon Lake High School was the "top team" in the high school category at a Nov. 4 Comal ISD chess match.

Canyon Lake High School student Erick Ortiz earned his school the ‘Top Team’ title in a tie-breaking match with Pieper High School’s Jacob Ybarra at a Comal ISD chess tournament on Nov. 4.

The CLHS chess team is coached by Ben Ceyanes and Charles Van Houten.

The district today also released results from an Oct. 21 match at Pieper High School.

Remaining tournaments are scheduled for Feb. 3, 2024 at CLHS and on April 20, 2024 at Smithson Valley High School. A secondary tournament dubbed “The Endgame” is scheduled for May 11, 2024 at Canyon High School.

Other Canyon Lake students who placed at the two tournaments are:

  • Jason Halverson, an eighth-grader at Mountain Valley Middle School. He placed third in Middle School Category-Individual at the Oct. 21 tournament.
  • Elias Salgado, an eighth-grader at Mountain Valley Middle School. He placed third in Middle School Category-Individual at the Nov. 4 tournament.
  • Diego Fuentes, who attends 11th grade at Canyon Lake High School. He placed third in High School Category-Individual.
