A former coach and board member of Canyon Lake Youth Soccer Club (CLYSC) will stand trial March 21 on charges he sexually assaulted a child.

Spring Branch resident Justin Villareal, 40, will be tried before Judge Dib Waldrip with the 433rd Judicial District. Comal County Assistant District Attorney Lauren Cole will prosecute the case.

Charges include sexual abuse of child continuous victim under 14, a first-degree felony, and two charges for sexual assault of a child, both second-degree felonies.

In November 2020, sources with immediate knowledge of the situation said charges were filed in May of that year following a “precipitating” incident at Lake Sommerville State Park & Trailway.

Villareal allegedly tried to molest a 17-year-old boy who fled the scene, in Villareal’s truck. A second victim, a teenage girl, came forward after that incident and described alleged ongoing sexual abuse.

In the aftermath of that event, Villareal was described by several in Canyon Lake as a “loving, involved parent, the last person you would suspect.”

He was arrested in July 2020 in the Houston area by Harris County Pct. 4 constables, who were asked by the Texas Rangers to “assist with a sexual assault of a juvenile warrant arrest on a wanted felon.”
