Comal County Commissioners today approved an addendum to an existing intergovernmental agreement between the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Marshals Service and the county that allows Comal County Jail to hold Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees.

ICE is now an “authorized user” at the county jail and will pay the county $100 per day per detainee.

The agreement defines federal detainees as individuals charged with federal offenses who are detained while awaiting trial, individuals who have been sentenced and are awaiting designation and transport to a Bureau of Prisons facility, and individuals who are awaiting a hearing on their immigration status or deportation.

Commissioners also approved a $210,000 grant for the Veterans Treatment Court.

This year’s grant is for 14 months instead of 12 months.
