Cornhole games at Goofy’s paid for a $7,267 check donation from the Canyon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce to the Comal County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Honor Guard.

Kim Collera, executive director of the chamber, presented the check to Sheriff Mark Reynolds at Thursday’s Comal County Commissioners Court meeting.

She helped raise the funds at a July 25 Serve and Protect Mixer at the popular Canyon Lake restaurant.

“We had so much fun playing cornhole so come and join us next year,” Collera said. The mixers also raise funds for Canyon Lake Fire/EMS and Precinct 1 and Precinct 4 constables.

Hunger Action Month

Also at the meeting, CRRC of Canyon Lake Resource Program Director Camille Cooper spoke about food insecurity after commissioners proclaimed September as Hunger Action Month.

Calling that a “starting point,” she said the Food Pantry is struggling to keep up with the high demand for its services.

Stocking staples like cereal and oatmeal on Food Pantry shelves is hard.

“It’s no secret, higher prices are causing food insecurity or (people) are caught off guard by an emergency situation,” she said. “None of us are ever prepared for that no matter how well we plan.”

While getting ready for Thursday’s meeting, Cooper said she was more concerned about what she was going to wear than what she would have for breakfast.

“It made me think about all of the people in the community who have one less thing to worry about because their kids will get one good meal at school,” she said,  urging Canyon Lake residents to volunteer at the Food Pantry, donate food or write checks.

National Recovery Month

Commissioners also proclaimed September as National Recovery Month.

On hand were representatives from New Braunfes’ Recovery Werks, which helps teens, young adults and families heal from the effects of Substance Abuse Disorder.

“Sometimes getting help, overcoming the stigma, is harder than walking in the door to get help,” said one, who did not identify herself.

Recovery Werks invites the public to attend a resource fair from 6-10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15 at its headquarters, 790 Landa St., New Braunfels. The free event includes a movie, prizes, food trucks, games, music and more.
