Pay & Save sold Lowe’s Market at 1345 Sattler Rd. to Comal County in 2019 and purchased 2.1 acres at 1398 FM 2673 to build a new grocery store.
The county planned to remodel and repurpose the old Lowe’s store as an annex to better serve Canyon Lake residents, Pct. 4 Commissioner Jen Crownover posted on social media seven years ago.
Those plans are now off the table.
Comal County Assistant Engineer David Vollbrecht told county commissioners July 30 that Lowe’s wants to stay put at its current location, 1345 Sattler Rd., and is negotiating an agreement with the county to exchange the two properties.
Lowe’s currently leases the store from the county.
“The intent for that property was to build an annex building up in Sattler,” he said during Commissioners Court. “When we purchased the property there was an existing grocery store on the property and we entered into a lease agreement to give them time to build a new grocery store some place else and vacate the property so then we could start with our own construction.”
“They did buy a piece of property in the nearby area in Sattler for this new grocery store, and we entered into a conversation with them about the possibility of us selling them the existing property in exchange for their vacant property that they had purchased for their future store.”
County spokesperson Cary Zayas declined to specify the exact location of the FM 2673 location, but according to the Comal County Appraisal District, Pay & Save Inc. owns property along 1398 FM 2673 valued at $359,300.
“At this point, the CCT is only soliciting offers of exchange through the publication of the notice,” she said in a written statement. “There is no agreement to exchange. As a result, we cannot provide the location of the real property (except for the county-owned property) … Any future agreement to exchange will be publicly noticed and provide all of the relevant details and locations.”
The 1345 Sattler Rd. property is valued at $1.3 million, according to county records. The store was built in 1976.
Pay & Save Marketing Director Matt Corbin also declined to comment, citing ongoing discussions with the county.
