Did you know the Mexican free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) is one of the most abundant mammals in North America? Known for their speed and long-distance flights, these bats can reach speeds of over 100 mph—making them among the fastest animals on earth! They’re also key players in our ecosystem, consuming thousands of insects each night, including agricultural pests.
Here at Guadalupe River State Park, bats are part of the natural story we love to share. If you’re looking for even more bat magic, check out our sister site, Old Tunnel State Park - Texas Parks and Wildlife (pictured), home to one of the largest bat emergences in Texas.
