It wasn't Comal County Constable’s Office Precinct 1 calling. Fraudster alert!CAN YOU SPOT THE NOT?
Recently a Comal County, Texas resident's attorney contacted our office asking why Constable Motz called their client in reference to not answering a subpoena for District Court. This was after someone was, allegedly, served with the subpoena by the Comal County Sheriff's Office. The resident did the right thing by ending the phone call as soon as they felt something wasn't right.
In reality, a criminal fraudster, not Constable Motz's long lost twin, was attempting to gain personal information from the resident posing as the Constable. The phone number's voicemail still says "Constable Motz with the Comal County Sheriff's Office" (which isn't a thing).
The resident was never served a subpoena and did nothing wrong.
Keep in mind:
❌ Never give personal identifying information over the phone.
❌ We and the CCSO will never ask for money or gift cards over the phone.
✅ Do an internet search of yourself and see what information is available. See if you can remove any personal information from the listed sites.
✅ Subpoenas must be served directly to the individual and cannot be accepted by anyone else.
✅ If something doesn't sound right, it might not be. Hang up and call the office directly.
✅ Save our phone number, 830-643-3725.
✅ Before answering an unknown number, look for the green check or "valid number" before answering.
✅ If you have fallen for the trap, contact your bank and credit agency immediately. 💡 Consider a credit freeze and obtaining a credit report.
💡 Download one of the many spam identifier apps that help identify and reject the phone call before it even pops up.
💡 iPhones can be set to only accept known numbers in your contacts. All others go to voicemail.
💻 Fraudulent activity can be reported to the FBI through the Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
