No injuries were reported but three dogs died in the fire.

Canyon Lake Fire/EMS Chief Robert Mikel said firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire in the 700 block of Hill Top Drive around 5:30 p.m.

Efforts to extinguish the blaze were hampered by high winds that fanned the flames, contributing to rapid fire spread, and by down electrical power lines which blocked the road. Damage to the third house was limited to the deck and a few windows, he said.

An investigation by the Comal County Fire Marshal is underway. No damage estimates are available.

Kellie McDougald and Doug Hughey lost three of their four dogs in the blaze.

“We are just so very appreciative of the firefighters and our neighbors that comforted us,” she said. “We’re just devastated and grieving our dogs.”

Lost in the fire were three chihuahua-mix dogs, Tater, 15, Shorty Marie, 7, and MoxieLouise, 3. A blond dog survived.

McDougald said her younger neighbors also lost their home and pets. She’s not sure whether the family is insured. They have a daughter who is around eight.

A GoFundMe online fundraiser has been set up for McDougald and Hughey. Click HERE for more information.
