Water Oriented Recreation District of Comal County (WORD) today canceled its 27th Annual Fun Fish Event for children due to low lake levels.

General Manager Mike Dussere said there is not a cove in Canyon Park deep enough to net off a large, fishable area to provide safe lakefront access for fishing.

Instead, WORD will open Canyon Park for free public access for the weekend of Feb. 24-25.

“We are sad that Fun Fish will not happen this year but are super hopeful that we will be back next year for an even bigger and better event,” he said.

Fun Fish provides children ages three to 16 with the opportunity to participate in fishing competitions and education stations for the chance to win prizes.

WORD issues permits to water-related businesses, allowing them to collect user fees from customers visiting the district. These fees fund a variety of services for visitors including law enforcement, trash pick up, contributions to local projects and organizations, and community education and outreach programs like Fun Fish.

WORD’s service area includes Canyon Lake and over 30 miles of floatable water on the Guadalupe River above and below Canyon Lake.
