New Braunfels MLK Association Reschedules Annual Celebration

Group of students on stage.
Members of Canyon High School's Black Student Union (BSU) last year participated in the New Braunfels MLK Association's ceremony honoring Martin Luther King Jr. They take the stage again on Saturday.

Heavy rains washed out the MLK March Ceremony & Celebration planned for Jan. 15, but the New Braunfels MLK Association will celebrate Black History Month instead at its 9th Annual Ceremony 2024, 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3 at Gruene United Methodist Church, 2629 E. Common St., New Braunfels.

The Rev. Edward Maney “literally becomes” King with a reading of the “I Have a Dream” speech, the association said in a statement.

Canyon High School (CHS) soloist Sylas Greene performs “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

CHS Black Student Union soloist Debra Ellis sings “Rise Up.” The group’s Step Team performs.

U.S. Air Force veteran and University of Texas graduate Christian Franklin will recite a poem about King and Black history.

The public is asked to bring non-perishable canned foods for the MLK Food4Kids Food Drive.
