A 21-year-old New Braunfels woman who was arrested by police and charged with allegedly setting fire to Comal County Republican headquarters Jan. 22 now faces one count of terrorism, a first-degree felony.

Grace Carol Brown was indicted April 15 and will be formally arraigned June 2, with Judge Stephanie Bascon presiding in the 466th District Court.

At 1:15 p.m. Jan. 14, New Braunfels police (NBPD) and the New Braunfels Fire Department responded to a call from employees at Republican headquarters, 265 Landa St., who said someone had broken a window and started a small fire that caused minor damage to the building.

Investigators with NBPD, the New Braunfels Fire Marshal’s Office, and the FBI’s San Antonio office later identified a suspect, gathered additional evidence, and obtained search and arrest warrants.

Upon arrest, Brown was charged with burglary of a building and arson. Bond was set at a combined $200,000.

Republican Party Chair Anita Valdez, speaking at a candidate forum Jan. 19, called the fire an act of “political violence.”

“Remember this despicable act on the Comal County Republican headquarters?” an administrator on the party’s Facebook page posted today. “The culprit has been charged with terrorism, as she should be.”
