Comal ISD reopened its doors to over 30,000 students today after receiving a ‘B’ on the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) 2026 A-F Academic Accountability Ratings.
The district earned that grade, according to a press release issued by the school district Monday.
Comal ID is the only public school district in Region 20 with more than 1,500 students to increase its overall score in each of the past three years.
Among large Texas public school districts with enrollments of 25,000 or more students, only 14 districts statewide have increased their overall accountability score for three consecutive years, making Comal the only large district in the San Antonio-Austin region to achieve that level of sustained improvement.
The statement also said Comal posted the second-highest 2026 rating among those 14 consistently improving large districts, trailing only Houston-area Clear Creek ISD, which earned an 89.
Eighteen Comal ISD campuses earned an ‘A’ rating and 14 campuses earned ‘Bs.’ District campuses also received a combined 94 distinctions from the TEA, up from 71.
Highlights:
- Mountain Valley, Rebecca Creek, Farias-Spitzer, Rahe Bulverde and Spech elementary schools each earned five of six eligible distinctions.
- Hill Country College Preparatory High School earned six of seven eligible distinctions.
- Davenport High School earned all seven eligible distinctions and received an overall ‘A’ rating with a score of 95, an increase of seven points from the previous year.
- Bill Brown and Hoffman Lane elementaries earned all six eligible distinctions.
“Our goal is continuous improvement and ensuring every student has the opportunity to reach his or her full potential,” District Superintendent John Chapman said. “These results are an important indication that the work taking place in our classrooms and across our campuses is moving us in the right direction.”
TEA’s accountability ratings evaluate school districts and campuses using multiple measures of academic performance, including student achievement, school progress, and efforts to close achievement gaps.
