A caravan of around 60 flag-festooned cars and trucks rounded the corner on Nacogdoches Street onto S. Guenther Ave. today, setting off on a drive around the city as part of the New Braunfels Trump Train’s first major foray since 2020.
In a speech before the rally founder Steve Ceh, who preaches at Canyon Lake’s Solomon’s Porch Ministries, urged his followers to be respectful and obey the law.
Ceh complained about the way he’s being treated in federal court, where he was named in a March 2022 lawsuit alleging that he and others violated the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 by using the Trump Train convoy to harass and intimidate Democrats riding on the so-called ‘Biden Bus’ on Oct. 30, 2020.
The incident made national headlines.
“They hate us and they demean us,” he said, adding that former President Donald Trump also is being unfairly treated by the court system.
“We’re in a battle,” Ceh said, also singling out local politicians and city officials who don’t toe the Trump Train line on issues like book banning.
He asked supporters to “purge them out.”
In 2021 supporters did exactly that, speaking out at New Braunfels City Council meetings and pressuring New Braunfels Mayor Rusty Brockman into dropping Democrat Colette Nies from consideration as a candidate for a two-year term on the New Braunfels Housing Authority Board of Commissioners.
They disapproved of Nies because she served a year’s probation for misdemeanor possession of a single marijuana joint almost 20 years earlier, describing her as a “terrorist” who worked for the Facebook page Living Blue in Comal County.
The Trump Train unsuccessfully backed member Kevin Robles for the New Braunfels City Council District 3 in May 2021 but helped elect Trump Train supporter Lawrence Spradley, who now represents District 4.
Whether or not Ceh’s followers will be players in the 2024 election cycle remains to be seen, but Ceh said rallies are planned once a month through July, when the train will begin driving weekly around the New Braunfels area (Canyon Lake was included in routes during the 2020 election cycle).
Donna Campbell, a Republican who represents Canyon Lake in District 25, is expected to speak. Carrie Isaacs, who represents Canyon Lake in the Texas House District 73, also is lined up.
Ceh said he will hand responsibilities for future Trump Trains to another follower but will continue to preach before convoys.
Before setting off, in prayer Ceh asked God to “save our nation from this wicked immoral agenda that is attacking us…may we not be intimidated by this evil.”
Canyon Lake resident Jeff Kantoff said today’s Trump Train rally was his first.
