WORD Bans Use of Charcoal Grills in Comal, Canyon Parks Due to Drought, Fire Risk

Personal propane grills are allowed but not charcoal/wood grills.

All charcoal grills in Comal and Canyon parks are closed now due to drought conditions and high fire risk.

Water Oriented Recreation District of Comal County (WORD), which operates the parks, said personal propane grills are allowed but not charcoal/wood grills.

Comal Park is a 116-acre park located on the south shore of Canyon Lake near Startzville. The day-use park is first-come, first serve, and amenities include picnic sites, two boat ramps, a pea gravel-and-sand swim beach, a playground and restrooms.

Canyon Park is a 485-acre day-use park located on the north shore of Canyon Lake. Amenities include picnic sites, one boat ramp, a pea gravel beach and restrooms. The park encompasses Canyon Swim Beach and the Madrone Trail.
