Workers with the Water Oriented District of Comal County in 2025 moved the courtesy dock at Boat Ramp #18 in Canyon Park. WORD is working to improve access to Canyon Lake at the two parks it manages.

The Water Oriented Recreation District of Comal County (WORD) hosts Roots & Rivers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 25 at Canyon Park, 14041 FM 306, Canyon Lake.

The free event is at Pavilion 1, just past Brookshire Brothers but before the park’s main gate. Visitors should park at Swim Beach 2. There will be limited handicapped parking.

The Earth Day and Arbor Day-themed Roots & Rivers includes hands-on activities about healthy ecosystems for kids and adults:

  • Lakeside yoga from 10-11 a.m.
  • Guided hikes from 11:30 to 1 p.m.
  • Pollinator Garden tours
  • Interactive nature stations
  • Free tree saplings for the first 60 people to fill “passports”
  • Raffle prizes

Also participating are Comal Conservation, Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (GBRA), the Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country, Texas Master Naturalist Lindheimer Chapter, and Tye Preston Memorial Library, which will park a bookmobile on site.

King Feed is donating the saplings and staff will talk about trees.

Alexis Runnels, WORD’s Communications and Events coordinator, said she’s trying to provide more land-based events for all ages as the drought continues, but isn’t giving up on providing the public better access to the water.

During the off-season WORD improved Comal Park’s swim beach and is trying to make trails leading to the water at Comal Park less steep.

“We’ve been working on trying to make it easier for people to get to the water,” she said.

Parks staff also added swinging benches, a ping pong table, a filtered dog-watering station, bike racks, and yard games at both parks.
