A 21-year-old Waelder man is in Comal County Jail, charged with intoxication assault with a vehicle after his pickup truck collided head-on with another pickup around 1:45 a.m. today in the 1000 block of FM 306 near Hunter Road in New Braunfels, killing a New Braunfels man and sending two others to the hospital.
Juan Sebastian Vargas was behind the wheel of a black Dodge Ram that was headed south on FM 306 when it allegedly struck a white Dodge Ram traveling north on FM 306.
The driver of the white truck, identified as 41-year-old Reva Garza of New Braunfels, suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The next of kin was notified.
Two passengers in Vargas’ truck, a 19-year-old male from Waelder and a 25-year-old male from Weimar, were transported to level 1 trauma centers in the area, both in critical but stable condition.
Vargas was taken to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in New Braunfels where he was medically cleared after the crash. A blood search warrant was issued, and following a blood draw he was transported to Comal County Jail and charged with a single count of intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury.
New Braunfels police said the incident remains under investigation and additional charges may be pending.
New Braunfels Police Department’s Traffic Unit responded to the scene and closed that section of FM 306 for approximately four hours while they conducted a full accident reconstruction investigation and cleared the scene of debris.
