In infested areas, large numbers of tawny crazy ants have caused great annoyance to residents and businesses. In some situations, it has become uncomfortable for residents to enjoy time in their yards. Companion animals may, in some cases, avoid the outdoors as well, and wildlife such as nesting songbirds can be affected.
The cumulative economic impact is currently unknown. The ants were found around Houston in 2002 and have spread.
Presented by Robert Puckett, PhD, associate professor and extension entomologist in the Texas A&M University Department of Entomology.
Presentation is free but register by Aug. 27 for one General CEU credit.

Howdy! Welcome back to another Wildlife Wednesday. 🤠
Did you know the Mexican free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) is one of the most abundant mammals in North America? Known for their speed and long-distance flights, these bats can reach speeds of over 100 mph—making them among the fastest animals on earth! They’re also key players in our ecosystem, consuming thousands of insects each night, including agricultural pests.
Here at Guadalupe River State Park, bats are part of the natural story we love to share. If you’re looking for even more bat magic, check out our sister site, Old Tunnel State Park (pictured), home to one of the largest bat emergences in Texas. Watching millions of bats take to the skies at sunset is a breathtaking sight you won’t forget.
Upcoming Bat Programs at Guadalupe River State Park:
🦇Bat Walk and Talk – Friday, August 29, 8-9:30 PM
🦇Exploration Station: Bats – Saturday, August 30, 10-11 AM
Come learn, explore, and experience the wonder of these amazing creatures!

A biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife says there's no cause for the alarm spreading on social media about the dead striped bass showing up along Canyon Lake's shoreline or floating lifelessly near the dam and at Boat Ramp #1.
